At the age of 12, Canadian Craig Kielburger read a newspaper article that motivated him to take action. Iqbal Masih, a boy the same age in Pakistan, had lost his life defending other children. Iqbal was kidnapped and sold into slavery at the age of four. He was chained to a carpet loom and forced to work up to 14 hours a day.

Craig Kielburger and Iqbal Masih. more_vert In 1995, Craig Kielburger read a newspaper article about the murder of 12-year-old Iqbal Masih, a formerly enslaved Pakistani boy, who became an activist against child labour following his escape from forced labour. Some early reports suggested Masih was assassinated for his activism. One morning over breakfast, 12-year-old Craig Kielburger was flipping through the newspaper looking for the comics when he was stopped short by a story: Iqbal Masih, a 12-year-old former child slave in Pakistan, had been murdered because he spoke up for human rights. Craig was 12. Iqbal was 12.

He was sold into bonded labor at a very early age to a local employer who owned carpet weaving business. His father had borrowed money (600 rupees - about $12) from the employer for wedding of Iqbal's brother and to repay the loan Iqbal was to work as a bonded labor 13 Apr 2021 Craig Kielburger came across a heart-wrenching story when he was only 12.

At the young age of 12, Craig Kielburger had an epiphany that children truly have the power to effect change. Inspired by the story of Iqbal Massih, a boy his age in Pakistan who had spoken out against child labor and was killed, Craig and his brother Marc initiated a project that they called Free the Children.

Finally, when Iqbal was ten, he escaped. 3 years later, he was murdered. He was shot while he was riding his bike with his friends.

As it goes, Craig found his purpose in life in April 1995 at the age of 12, when he read an article about Iqbal Masih, a former child labourer in Pakistan’s carpet trade.
